PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria woman has been indicted in the death of her son from last week, and the alleged abuse against the boy’s twin sister.
A Peoria County grand jury on Tuesday indicted 24-year-old Kaleeyah Sprinkle on one count of Murder in connection to 20-month-old Amiri Robinson. She was also indicted on one count of Aggravated Battery in connection to alleged abuse against the twin sister.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says Sprinkle brought Robinson to the Peoria Fire Station on Hurlbert the morning of May 6th. He was taken to a hospital after he suffered severe injuries. Police were informed at the hospital that Robinson suffered severe brain damage, lacerations to his spleen and liver, a pelvic fracture, multiple scratches, and abrasions.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says Robinson was pronounced dead just before 3:15 P.M. on Friday at the Pediatric Intensive Care unit at OSF Saint Francis. He says an autopsy shows Robinson suffered multiple severe and non-accidental blunt force trauma injuries throughout his body, as a result of ”perpetrated child abuse.”
Prosecutors say police officers spoke to a witness that reported seeing a woman leave an apartment, holding an apparent lifeless baby. A man, later identified as 34-year-old Zaxton Johnson, was with her and reportedly carrying another baby wrapped in a blanket, later identified as the twin sister.
Johnson’s vehicle was pulled over by police, with officers spotting the sister in the backseat, reportedly with a swollen lip and significant bruising and swelling on her left eye and left side of her face.
Sprinkle allegedly told police that both children’s injuries were accidental, but prosecutors say the treating doctor stated the injuries were non-accidental trauma, and could not have occurred from a fall.
Prosecutors say Sprinkle was initially charged with four counts Aggravated Battery and released from custody by a judge under certain conditions, such as GPS monitoring. Peoria Police says she was arrested on Tuesday, and prosecutors are planning to file a petition to detain her.
Police say Johnson was arrested for Violation of the Sex Offender Registry by Failing to Register. He was additionally charged with Endangering the Life and Health of a Child.
