(Some Reuters) – PEORIA, Ill. – President Donald Trump this week pledged to strengthen U,S. ties to the United Arab Emirates and announced deals with the Gulf state totaling over $200 billion. The two countries also agreed to deepen cooperation in artificial intelligence.
The deals also included a $14.5 billion commitment from Eithad Airways to invest in 28 Boeing 787 and 777x aircraft powered by engines made by GE Areospace.
Sources have said the agreements will give the Gulf country expanded access to advanced artificial intelligence chips from the U.S. after previously facing restrictions over Washington’s concerns that China could access the technology.
During an appearance Saturday on WMBD’s Pete McMurray Show, 16th district Republican Congressman Darin LaHood of Peoria said the deals are a “huge win” for the President.
“I don’t think people realize the amount of money and investments that are going to come to the United States,” LaHood said. “And it wouldn’t have happened but for the President going to Saudi Arabia, and Qatar and the UAE.”
Trump had also announced the United States is getting very close to a nuclear arms deal with Iran, saying Tehran had “sort of” agreed to the terms.
LaHood said, when it comes to Iran, actions speak louder than words.
“Iran has a choice here. Do they want to continue with their nuclear program?” Lahood said. “If they do I think there are going to be sever consequences for that. If they don’t and they wind down their nuclear program I think you’ll find a willing partner, in some respects, with America moving forward.”
When asked if Iran can be trusted, LaHood said, “Trust, but verify.”
