PEORIA, Ill. – An 18-year-old will be tried as an adult for a shooting outside a Peoria East Bluff market last summer.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says 18-year-old Caron Payton is charged with Aggravated Battery with a Firearm.
Payton was arrested June 5th in connection to the case. He was ordered held at a detention hearing on Monday.
The shooting occurred outside Amir’s Market on East Frye on August 26th last year, where police responded after 28 shots were fired. Officers found a victim that had been shot multiple times with non-life-threatening injuries.
Prosecutors say surveillance video captured the shooting, showing the victim running away from two armed men who reportedly fired multiple shots at him. The victim jumped a fence to try and escape, while the pair continued to shoot at him.
The video identified Payton and Jaylan Russell, who was previously charged in the case, as the shooters.
Prosecutors say Payton was 17 at the time of the shooting, but his age and the nature of the charges made it an automatic transfer to adult court.
