PEORIA, Ill. – A Bartonville man will remain in the Peoria County Jail after being charged this past weekend for allegedly abusing his two-month-old baby.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says a petition to detain 24-year-old Gabriel King was granted Tuesday, after being charged with Aggravated Battery.
Prosecutors say the mother left the baby with King on June 2nd to go to work, with King calling her that afternoon to say the baby was crying uncontrollably and would not calm down.
The mother returned home and noticed the baby had been screaming in a way she had not heard before, and noticed bruising while changing the baby’s diaper.
King reportedly told police that he became “overstimulated and overwhelmed” while watching the baby, and claimed he may have handled the baby too roughly and might have hit something, after mentioning the baby fell and had grabbed the arm.
But prosecutors say the treating doctor noted a pattern of bruising and injuries that were a result of child abuse and not accidental.
