PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police want to remind the community to have fun and be safe on Halloween.
Public Information Officer Amy Dotson said there are some tips that parents should keep in mind for their little ghouls and goblins.
“Costumes should be flame resistant. Avoid masks that can become too hot and impair a child’s vision,” Dotson said.
Dotson also recommended using a flashlight and wearing light colored clothing.
“And also very importantly, real looking guns, swords, and knives, etc., should never be used,” said Dotson.
During the city’s trick-or-treat hours from 5-8 p.m., Dotson said it is best to walk in groups with a trusted adult.
“Never cross the street between parked cars, always use a crosswalk or the corner. Try to use sidewalks if they are available,” Dotson said.
Trick-or-treaters should only visit houses with porch lights on, and should not go inside a house.
Dotson said to never accept rides from strangers.
“And always, always, always, do not eat the candy until you get home and have an adult inspect the candy,” Dotson said.
For those handing out candy, do not forget to turn on the porch light.
“Don’t forget to restrain your fur babies inside the house,” Dotson said.
Drivers should use caution and watch out for excited kids walking around.
Dotson said adults who attend parties where alcohol is served, should designate a sober driver.
Parents with trick-or-treaters should be aware of the cold temperatures that will be around Thursday night. News partner 25 News Chief Meteorologist Chuck Collins said temperatures could drop into the teens with wind chills.
