SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois Emergency Management Agency suggests that as temperatures begin to drop, families should prepare for winter weather emergencies.
Winter hasn’t officially started yet, but parts of the state, including the Peoria area, have already seen snow.
I-EMA Spokesperson Rebecca Clark says it’s good to be ready for whatever Mother Nature throws our way.
“We like to say being unprepared for winter weather is not only inconvenient, but it can be dangerous. That’s why we’re encouraging all Illinoisans to take a few minutes and put together your home and vehicle emergency supply kits,” Clark said.
Clark says emergency kits should include water, blankets, flashlights, extra batteries and first aid supplies. Officials say this is also a good time to throw an ice scraper in the car.
Freezing temperatures, ice storms and heavy snowfall can leave you stranded, or in dark during winter storms.
“Updating your home and vehicle emergency supply kits, changing your furnace filter at home and updating and stocking your emergency supply kit at home, in the event that you lose power, are things that you can do now,” Clark said.
I-EMA reminds Illinois residents not to forget the special needs of pets, young children and the elderly when putting together an emergency supply kit.
