PEORIA, Ill. (WEEK) — Veterans Day is Monday, November 11 and several organizations and area businesses are hosting events to recognize and honor veterans through ceremonies, parades and free meals. Here’s a list of what is going on and closures in central Illinois on Monday.
Peoria City Hall Offices
City Hall offices will be closed on Monday, November 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Offices will reopen on Tuesday, November 12 at 8 a.m.
Le Roy – Gaultney Brothers Memorial Highway ceremony
The American Legion Ruel Neal Post 79 in Le Roy will be hosting a ceremony for the renaming of a portion of Interstate 74 between Downs and Le Roy as the Gaultney Brothers Memorial Highway.
The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, November 11.
Heartland Community College
The community college will host a Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11. The Veterans Center at the Heartland Campus Cafe, will host a program, including speaker Lt. Col. John Cross, a presentation of colors by student veterans and remarks by school officials.
Illinois Central College
ICC will host its Veterans Day celebration at the East Peoria Campus cafeteria from 10-10:45 a.m. Monday, November 11.
World War II and Iwo Jima veteran Karl Schmidt will be the guest of honor.
Princeville CUSD 326 Veterans Day Program
The Princeville school district will host its Veterans Day program at 9:30 a.m. Monday, November 11. The district is inviting veterans and community members to attend the program at Princeville Jr/Sr High School.
Concordia Lutheran School
Concordia Lutheran School will host its Veterans Day assembly at 1:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 11. The Marine Corps JROTC from Richwoods High School will present the colors. A guest speaker will speak on his experiences. The community is invited to this event.
Bloomington-Normal NAACP
The Bloomington-Normal branch of the NAACP will host a lunch for veterans from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, November 11 at Olive Garden, 1701 East Empire Street, Bloomington. Olive Garden will be providing free meals throughout the day to all veterans who provide proof of military service.
Hy-Vee
All Hy-Vee locations will host a Veterans Day breakfast, offering free meals to veterans and active-duty military members. Veterans will also receive 10 percent off their grocery total when shopping at Hy-Vee on November 11.
Obed & Isaac’s
The Obed & Isaac’s Microberery and Eatery will offer a free meal to veterans and active military personnel on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11. The offer is good for dine-in only at the restaurant.
Texas Roadhouse
Free lunches will be given from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, November 11. Veterans, including active, retired and former U.S. military can choose one of 10 entrees.
CityLink
CityLink will be offering free rides to veterans on Monday, November 11. Passengers are asked to present valid veteran identification or a CityLink half-fare ID to the bus operator upon boarding the bus.
PCAPS ‘Pets for Vets’
The Peoria County Animal Protection Services will waive standard adoption fees for veterans from November 11-30. To qualify for this promotion, Veterans and/or active duty military members must submit proof of military service. Acceptable forms of proof include: DD214, DD256, NGB22, or a valid military ID. Adopters must also be approved through the shelter’s regular adoption process.
All animals adopted from PCAPS are spayed or neutered, microchipped, given their first round of vaccines and a general de-wormer, and are sent home with a free 30-day trial of pet health insurance
