PEORIA, Ill. — Whitney’s Walk For Life raises awareness about suicide prevention in Central Illinois.
The event, now in it’s 19th year, is coming up on Saturday, July 30 at Jubilee State Park.
“So, there’s a walk and a run, if you’re not a runner. We welcome both adults and children, and often a lot of dogs,” said Holly Bill with the Hult Center for Healthy Living.
Bill told WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show”, if you suspect someone’s considering taking their own life, or seems depressed, it’s okay to talk to them about it, and let them know there’s help available.
People considering taking their life often feel it’s the only way out of their pain or depression.
“But, we do have ways out. We do have resources, especially in this community, and that’s what this walk is all about,” Bill said.
Through a partnership with the UnityPoint Health Foundation, Hult Center for Healthy Living can refer you to a counselor or therapist that you can see you, regardless of insurance.
Whitney’s Walk For Life was founded by friends and family of Whitney Grotts in 2004, after her death.
To date, Whitney’s Walk has raised $1.7 million for suicide prevention programs and training through the Hult Center.
The 5K run on July 30 begins at 7:55 a.m., the walk begins at 8 a.m.
The fundraising goal for this year’s walk is $150,000. To register or donate, click HERE.
