PEORIA, Ill. — It’s no easy feat cooking for over 4,000 people.
Chef Chris Franzo, with Peoria’s Southside Mission, told WMBD’s Greg and Dan, that’s how many container meals they will deliver to local residents on Thanksgiving Day.
Franzo said the preparation has already begun. Over 300 volunteers will be involved in preparing the food and distributing it on Turkey Day.
“The week of, on Monday, we bake all the pies. We bake 500 pies. On Monday and Tuesday, we slice a thousand pounds of turkey and make all the mashed potatoes. They’re (the meals) all made up in a microwavable container,” Franzo said.
In addition to the deliveries on Thanksgiving, which begin at 8:30 a.m., Southside Mission puts on a noon-time meal for around 500 people.
Franzo said donations from the community make the meals possible.
“That $40,000 underwrites the cost of the meals, the containers and the zip-lock bags,” Franzo said.
