UPDATE – 3:41 P.M.
(Canton, Ill.) – A portion of a roof collapsed Friday afternoon during a fire at a Canton resale store.
Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly two hours at Odds and Ends Resale on White Court, between Elm and Pine streets, according to the City of Canton.
25 News reports that while crews were working to extinguish the fire, a section of the roof gave way.
The Canton Fire Department received assistance from multiple agencies. Aerial ladder trucks from Buckheart, Pekin, and Havana fire departments responded to the scene, along with additional personnel and equipment from surrounding departments.
Fire crews initially entered the three-story building but pulled back after encountering heavy smoke on the second floor.
Buildings surrounding the store were evacuated as a precaution. The City of Canton urged the public to stay clear of the White Court area during firefighting operations.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
