PEORIA, Ill. — Peoria firefighters were called around 2:15 a.m. Thursday to a fire in the 1100 block of E. Kansas Street.
The homeowner, who was already outside with police, said the fire started in the kitchen and two of his dogs were still inside.
Battalion Chief Ralph Phillips said the fire was put out in about 10 minutes, but not without tragedy.
“Crews went inside and found the two dogs, but unfortunately one of them did not make it,” he said.
The homeowner was taken to a local hospital for medical observation.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
