PEORIA, Ill. – Captain Chris Watkins has officially taken over as interim Peoria County Sheriff, given that Brian Asbell’s resignation from the job took effect Friday morning.
Watkins has 18 years of experience with the department, serving in virtually every area of sheriffs department operations, but tells 25 News there’s more to be done.
“I want people to know our deputies,” said Watkins. “Not just seeing a squad car, but actually seeing a face, knowing who the deputy is. You’re going to see a lot more on social media getting to know who we are.”
Watkins will serve at least until the County Board makes an appointment for a replacement for Asbell. He’s also the Republican nominee for the job in the November election.
“I want people to go to bed feeling safe,” said Watkins. “If they’re the unfortunate victim of a crime, I want them to know they matter.”
