PEORIA, Ill. – A teenager will spend the next few years in prison after pleading guilty to a weapons charge in connection to a January incident in Peoria’s North Valley.
18-year-old Kentrell Joiner was sentenced Monday to three years and six months after pleading guilty in September to Unlawful Use of Weapons.
Joiner was one of three individuals who fled from police at the Stop N Save in the North Valley on January 28th.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says Joiner was found hiding behind a garbage can at a house in the area of Morgan and Jefferson. Police also recovered a gun with an auto sear, which makes the weapon fully-automatic, from the ground where Joiner was hiding.
At Monday’s sentencing hearing, prosecutors testified of Joiner’s history of possessing, buying, and selling firearms, and requested the maximum of six years in prison, per a prior plea agreement.
Joiner was 17 at the time of the incident, and was initially charged as a juvenile. The case was transferred to adult court in April.
Zavion Knox was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the same incident, after pleading guilty in October to an Unlawful Use of a Weapon charge. The third person involved, Zarion Harris, is still pending.
