EAST PEORIA, Ill. – Multiple police agencies were involved in a chase Tuesday morning that began in Tazewell County and ended near the state capital.
East Peoria Police says a bulletin was received from Washington Police regarding a person they had probable cause to arrest reportedly for Criminal Sexual Assault and Possession of a Firearm for an incident occurring in their jurisdiction.
The suspect, reportedly armed with a rifle, fled their house in a vehicle that was spotted in the area of River Road and Washington in East Peoria.
East Peoria Police say officers attempted to make a stop, but a pursuit began by the suspect that came to an end on Interstate 55 near Sangamon Avenue in Springfield. Washington Police says they traveled to the scene of the stop to continue their investigation. The investigation ran concurrently with ISP, with state police conducting an investigation of events near Springfield.
A portion of southbound I-55 in the area was closed during the pursuit, but has since been reopened.
Washington Police says they believe there is no on-going threat to the public at this time.
Agencies involved in the pursuit include East Peoria Police, Creve Coeur Police, the Tazewell County Sheriff’s Office, and Illinois State Police.
