CHILLICOTHE, Ill. – A man has died in a house fire Tuesday afternoon in rural Chillicothe.
Peoria County Sheriff Chris Watkins says the fire was called in just before 4:00 P.M. in the area of Galena and Rome Road.
Deputies were informed while en-route that the family had escaped, except for a 62-year-old man.
Watkins says heavy smoke and fire conditions prevented deputies from entering the home, with firefighters eventually pulling out the man.
The man was taken to a hospital with serious injuries by AMT. Watkins says the man was pronounced dead at around 5:45 P.M. at the hospital.
Peoria County investigators and the State Fire Marshal are investigating the cause of the fire.
Fire departments that responded include Chillicothe, Peoria Heights, Lacon-Sparland, Akron-Princeville, Dunlap, and the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office.
It’s the second fatal fire in the area in as many weeks. An eight-month-old girl died in a fire at Pinewood Estates, about a mile away from the home.
