PEORIA, Ill. – The man accused of shooting and injuring a Peoria County Sheriff’s deputy must remain in jail until trial.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says a judge ordered 51-year-old Larry Bell to be detained on charges that include Attempt First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Armed Violence, and Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine. Bell is also charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Repeat Felony Offender, based on prior convictions in Kankakee County.
The incident occurred January 31st, in South Peoria where Bell allegedly attempted to flee a vehicle stopped by Deputy Jack Evans, and a foot chase ensued.
Bell allegedly waited for Evans after rounding the corner of a building and waited for Evans, with a gun raised a few feet away from him. Evans then reportedly struggled with Bell to the ground, where Bell stood up and shot Evans three more times while he was on the ground.
Evans suffered gunshot wounds to his legs and abdomen, and is in stable condition.
Bell was allegedly later found by Peoria Police in an abandoned building in possession of methamphetamine. Police reportedly recovered a handgun and shell casings that matched from the abandoned building.
