PEORIA, Ill. – A Peoria man arrested late last year for a shooting death a year ago now says he wants to represent itself.
Peoria County Circuit Court records indicate Marvin Alexander, 20, was in court Thursday for a scheduling conference, ahead of what was to be a jury trial about ten days from now.
Instead, Alexander asked to represent himself at trial. He had been appointed a public defender. That put the case on hold, with a hearing on the matter now being held July 28th.
Alexander allegedly killed De’Monyae Phelps, 19, on South Shelley Street last July — the 18th of 34 homicides last year.
Alexander is jailed on $1 million bond.
