PEORIA, Ill. (25 News) – Attorney General Kwame Raoul announced Monday a statewide partnership with Amazon’s Ring and the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence to provide security cameras to domestic violence survivors across Illinois.
The partnership will distribute 1,000 Ring cameras to domestic violence survivors in all 102 counties. The announcement builds on existing local programs, including one at the Center for Prevention of Abuse in Peoria that has distributed about 48 Ring cameras each year to clients.
CFPA provides cameras to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and older adults at risk. All services at the Center for Prevention of Abuse are free and confidential, with a 24-hour crisis hotline available.
Kevin Nowlan, operating officer with CFPA, told 25 News that the cameras provide an additional security layer that can help prosecutors pursue cases against abusers who violate court orders.
“This can provide that additional level of security, which I think is so important,” Nowlan said. “If this were to pick up somebody, then they can call the police immediately and have the police come there. In the case of an order of protection, that person would be arrested for violating that order.”
The Center for Prevention of Abuse doesn’t expect to receive additional cameras from the state partnership, according to Nowlan.
