PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria Zoo is saying goodbye to two of its beloved animals.
In a Facebook post, Zoo staff said that Sultana, a red-river hog, and Violet, a miniature donkey, were euthanized last week due to age-related conditions.
The decisions were made in close consultation with the Zoo’s veterinary team.
Sultana arrived at the Peoria Zoo in 2008 from the Bronx Zoo, as one of the original animals in the Africa! Habitat.
Red-river hogs typically have a life span of 15 to 20 years. Sultana lived to be 20, but had been under close care the past few years because of her medical conditions.
Sultana’s legacy lives on through her offspring at the Houston Zoo and the Los Angeles Zoo.
Violet came to the Zoo in 2001, where she greeted guests for 25 years. Miniature donkeys typically live to be between 25 and 35 years old.
Peoria Zoo thanks its visitors over the years for loving Sultana and Violet as they did.
