PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police has been granted access to security cameras at Peoria Public Schools.
After the topic was tabled last month, the PPS board unanimously approved the agreement in its consent agenda Monday night.
The agreement lets Peoria Police have real-time access to Peoria Public Schools cameras for the purposes of investigations.
Citing a recent case involving teenagers allegedly stealing a vehicle, Superintendent Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat explained before the vote how it could make investigations more efficient.
“It took multiple officers and several days to just to copy video onto a disc,” Kherat said. “So this agreement simply makes the process more efficient, allowing law enforcement to respond more quickly when there is a legitimate emergency or an investigation.
Kherat reiterated to the board that the district would maintain ownership of the district’s cameras.
