PEORIA, Ill. – A head-on collision in Peoria Thursday night left one person dead and three others injured, including an infant.
Fire Battalion Chief Rick Waldron said crews responded to reports of an accident with entrapment at the intersection of N. Allen Road and W. Altorfer Drive around 9:20 p.m.
Crews found a mid-sized sedan and an SUV had collided head-on in the southbound lane of Allen Road at the intersection, with both vehicles sustaining major front-end damage.
Waldron said the sedan had spun off the road. One passenger in the front seat was deceased upon arrival. A passenger in the back of the vehicle had to be extricated using the “jaws of life” and hydraulic cutters.
Bystanders reportedly pulled an infant from the back of the car through a window before crews arrived.
The driver of the SUV was pulled from their vehicle by firefighters.
Two adults were taken to a trauma center with critical injuries. The infant suffered minor injuries.
Crews remained on the scene for an hour to clear the scene and assist the coroner.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
