PEORIA, Ill. – A man will spend 12 years in prison for his role in a shooting outside a market in Peoria’s East Bluff nearly two years ago.
That’s after 20-year-old Jaylan Russell pleaded guilty Monday to Aggravated Battery with a Firearm. Russell must serve 85% of the sentence.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says Russell received 12 years because it was his first felony conviction, and the victim was reluctant to cooperate.
The incident occurred the afternoon of August 26th, 2024, where they found an 18-year-old victim with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds outside of Amir’s Market.
Prosecutors say surveillance video shows the victim running from two armed men who fired shots at him, even after the victim jumped a fence to try and escape.
Russell and 19-year-old Caron Payton were identified as the shooters, with Payton’s case still pending.
