PEORIA, Ill. — Charitable giving scams target people with big hearts during the holidays.
Jessica Tharp, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau in Peoria, told WMBD’s Greg and Dan, if you’re contacted on the phone by someone asking for money for a local charity, it could be a scam.
“This is the time of giving. In central Illinois we give, give, give. And, so this is definitely a prime target for scam artists,” Tharp said.
Tharp recommends deciding what causes are most important to you, then contact the BBB.
“Whether that’s your local police department, children, or pets, or something like that. Then, we can help you find a reputable charity,” Tharp said.
Tharp said a lot of ‘pop-up’ charity scams surface each year around the holidays.
