TAZEWELL COUNTY, Ill. (25 News) – Plans are moving forward for what could be Washington’s first adult-use marijuana dispensary.
Zepln Enterprise, LLC has applied for a special use permit to open a Key Cannabis Dispensary at Centennial Drive and McClugage Road.
The nearly one acre of commercially zoned property is not developed, and it’s next to an O’Reilly Auto Parts store.
Business hours would be restricted to 8 a.m.–7 p.m. No outdoor seating would be allowed. In addition, current city code forbids drive-through marijuana sales.
Regulations approved by the city council in 2019 also include that dispensaries must be at least 1,000 feet from public and private schools, day care, and licensed residential care facilities. Dispensaries must also be at least 250 feet from residential areas.
25 News reports that Washington would collect a 3-percent cannabis sales tax on top of the current 9-percent city sales tax.
The city’s planning and zoning commission unanimously recommended approval of the special use permit on April 1. City staffers also recommend approval.
“The proposed special use for the city’s first adult-use dispensary is appropriately located and is not expected to adversely impact nearby properties,” a staff memo said.
The city council has the final say. Their first reading of the special use request is likely to be on the April 20 meeting agenda. A vote is not expected at that time.
