PEORIA, Ill. – An SUV, leading Peoria Police in a chase, crashed into an embankment after driving off a section of the Harmon Highway overpass still under construction early Wednesday morning.
Peoria Police says the crash happened just outside Peoria city limits around 1:40 a.m.
Peoria firefighters were called to the overpass at S. Kickapoo Creek Road, on reports the SUV left the road, Battalion Chief Josh Maroney says.
Police Spokesperson Semone Roth says the SUV was running from PPD after officers were called about a fight at the Dream Night Club in South Peoria.
Roth says at approximately 12:46 a.m. Wednesday, PPD responded to the 2200 block of SW Washington Street on a report of individuals involved in a disturbance with firearms. When police arrived, they observed a vehicle fleeing the area.
Roth says no one was injured at the night club.
During the chase with police, the SUV tried to jump part of the bridge that had been demolished, landing in a 20-foot wide by 15-foot deep hole, Roth says.
Peoria Fire found the vehicle in the ravine below the bridge. A man got out of the SUV before firefighters arrived. He was found on the north embankment of the bridge.
The man was taken into custody and to OSF Saint Francis with non-life-threatening injuries. His name and age were not released.
The incident remains under investigation.
The Peoria Fire Department Drone Team responded to the scene to help PPD, along with the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office.
