CHICAGO, Ill. — A record-breaking year for adult-use cannabis sales in Illinois.
The state’s recreational marijuana industry racked up $1.5 billion in sales during fiscal year 2022, that ended on June 30th.
Those sales also led to a 50% increase in sales tax revenue generated for the state, coming in at a record $445 million.
Illinois Department of Revenue Spokesperson Maura Kownacki confirms 25% of that revenue is earmarked for disadvantaged communities.
“The state has awarded $113 million in grants using funds generated from the taxes on adult-use cannabis, to support and invest in underserved communities throughout the state,” Kownacki said.
The sales tax revenue from cannabis sales has also been good for local governments which received disbursements totaling over $146 million.
