WASHINGTON, Ill. (25 News) – The City of Washington recognized the courage and quick thinking of several local heroes whose actions helped save lives during two separate fires in late May.
During a recent city council meeting, city leaders presented Special Recognition Awards to civilians and a firefighter paramedic who stepped up in moments of crisis.
The first rescue happened on May 31, when a fire destroyed an apartment building behind Casey’s on School and Grant Streets. Three people were hospitalized, and officials said 10 to 12 people lived in the building.
As flames spread, Brandon Hardt alerted residents and helped them escape. Clayton Kuhlman brought a wooden ladder that witnesses said proved critical during the rescue. Karl Simmons also stopped to assist before first responders arrived.
Washington firefighter-paramedic Daniel Grothe then climbed the ladder to rescue a person to safety.
The city also honored Logan Mackiney, Kelsey Tisdale, and Claire Uftring for their actions during a fire at Chapters Living, a retirement community in Washington, one day earlier. The three helped evacuate nearly 40 residents from the facility.
Mayor Lilija Stevens praised those recognized for their selfless actions.

“Those who acted in a time of crisis reflected the very best of our community and deserve our sincere appreciation,” Stevens said. “A sincere thank you to all of you for your heroic actions.”
The civilians involved in both rescues received Special Recognition Awards from the City of Washington and the Washington Fire Department.
