PEORIA, Ill. –A new state program provides free home smoke alarms to families served by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
The program was announced Friday by Governor Pritzker.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, 3 out of 5 fire deaths in a home are a result where there are no working smoke detector.
“Fire prevention experts have documented that smoke alarms save lives,” said Illinois DCFS Acting Director Marc Smith. “The department is committed to doing everything we can to protect Illinois children, and ensuring that every family we serve has a working smoke alarm is one more step we are taking to ensure families and children are safe.”
Illinois law requires every household to have smoke alarms within 15 feet of every bedroom and at
least one on each floor of the home
Case workers visiting families will be armed with smoke detectors for households that don’t have one. D-C-F-S families can also call their case worker or local field office for a smoke alarm.
