PEORIA, Ill. – The head of Peoria County’s Emergency Management and Preparedness is urging people to take precautions in this week’s extreme heat.
An Extreme Heat is in effect until Thursday night, with the National Weather Service forecasting heat index values as high as 105 to 110.
Jason Marks says it’s the first wave of extended heat across central Illinois this summer season.
Marks says one of the most important things people can do to be safe if they have to be outside is to stay hydrated. He says that includes drinking water, and avoiding alcohol and sugary drinks. In addition, Marks says people should begin drinking water the day or night before if they know they’ll be outside for an event.
Marks says if people have to be outside, they should wear light and loose clothing to avoid absorbing heat. He says people should also spend time in the shade, or have an umbrella to cool down. Marks notes that having a personal cooling fan can work as well.
Another important factor of being outside is recognizing signs of dehydration and heat exhaustion. Marks says one sign of dehydration is a darker urine. More signs include feeling light headed or an upset stomach.
Marks says if someone suspects that the heat is making them ill, they should call 911 immediately.
Taking care of oneself is not the only thing that Marks suggests people do in the heat outside. He says people should check in on those more vulnerable to the heat.
“The elderly, individuals maybe with cardiovascular illnesses, asthma, young children need to be more cognizant or aware of conditions when they’re outside,” Marks said.
Marks says that’s due to those individuals, especially those on medications, potentially not being able to sweat in the heat to cool themselves down.
