PEORIA, Ill. – A garage fire caused an estimated $780,000 in damage to a north Peoria duplex Wednesday afternoon.
The Peoria Fire Department was dispatched to 7219 N. Charles Way at 12:39 p.m. after reports of a vehicle fire near a building. The first arriving company found heavy fire showing from the attached garage of a one-story residential duplex.
Firefighters deployed multiple hose lines to extinguish the fire in the garage and attic. Crews also cut a ventilation hole in the roof to release heat and smoke from the structure.
Fire crews brought the blaze under control within 15 minutes. Crews remained on scene for approximately three hours checking for hidden fire and ventilating the structure.
Their quick action prevented the fire from spreading into the rest of the structure and the neighboring residence.
One adult was home at the time of the fire and safely evacuated before firefighters arrived. A thorough search of both residences confirmed no other occupants were inside.
One firefighter sustained a minor burn to their hand and was treated and released from a local hospital. No civilian injuries were reported.
Both households displaced by the fire secured housing through family members or their respective insurance companies.
The fire has been ruled accidental.
