PEORIA, Ill. – High school seniors across Illinois are heading back to class, and they’re going to find something new on campus this year.
Starting now, Illinois’ public high schools are required to give students of voting age a real opportunity to register to vote right at school.
It’s part of a new state law, House Bill 4339, which aims to clear up the confusion that often comes with signing up to vote for the first time. The goal is to provide a straightforward space for students to ask questions and get registered without the usual hurdles.
The legislation honors the legacy of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr., celebrating his lifetime of work in civil rights and public service.
Peoria’s own State Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth backed the measure, calling it an important step toward building a more active, engaged generation of young voters.
