SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Good news if you’re looking for work, or just keeping an eye on the local economy.
Unemployment is down in nearly every metro area across Illinois compared to this time last year. That’s the latest report from the Department of Employment Security.
It means the job market is generally tightening up and getting a bit healthier across the board.
The Quad Cities, Decatur, and Rockford are seeing some of the biggest drops in the number of people out of work.
Here in the Peoria area, the unemployment rate is 3.8 percent, down 1.1 percent from a year ago.
While Chicago actually hit a record number of total jobs for July, the data shows a mixed bag when it comes to job growth—some areas are adding positions, while others have seen a slight decline over the year.
Bottom line: The labor market is showing resilience, with more people finding work than a year ago in most of our communities. It’s a trend worth watching as we head into the fall.
