SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — As you hit the road for the first time in 2020, be aware of changes to driving laws.
Fines are set to increase for reckless driving, passing a stopped school bus, and construction-related offenses: speeding in a work zone and hitting a worker.
Hitting a construction worker will cost $25,000. That’s a $15,000 increase over its 2019 cost.
There’s also the modern issue of streaming video while driving.
“Unfortunately, there have been incidents across the country of operators of motor vehicles watching videos on their personal cell phone or other electronic device while they’re driving,” said State Senator Steve Stadelman.
Thus, a law is scheduled to go into effect prohibiting such action.
“There’s some concern the current state law is somewhat unclear or could use further clarification to make sure that’s prohibited,” Stadelman said.
“So, this legislation specifically states watching video on a personal electronic device will not be allowed.”
A law is also scheduled to take effect prohibiting tinted or smoked lights.
