PEORIA, Ill. –A weekend crash in Peoria injured a handful of people and left one Peoria Police officer in the hospital.
Illinois State Police investigators say it happened shortly before 8:40 p.m. Saturday along West War Memorial Drive near University Street.
An officer was reportedly assisting another motorist following an earlier hit and run incident.
An ISP crash report says 50-year-old Charles B. Whenrey then swerved onto the shoulder with his vehicle, side-swiping the patrol cruiser and slamming into the hit and run victim’s vehicle as well as hitting the police officer, a 31-year-old four year veteran of the force.
That officer was reportedly transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Three other people, including Whenrey, suffered injuries at the scene, but reportedly did not require hospitalization.
State Police say any charges will be pending the results of their crash investigation.
