MORTON, Ill. — Firefighters were called around 5:15 a.m. Monday to 312 W. Pershing Street, near the Morton Library, for a house fire.
Morton Fire Chief Joe Kelly said the home was fully engulfed in flames when crews arrived.
“That property is an abandoned house. It was not lived in. Our crews arrived to find the house fully involved. There was fire coming from the roof,” Kelly said.
Kelly said weather definitely was a factor in fighting the flames.
“The winds were pretty strong. So, of course wind was a factor that increased the veracity of the fire. And, for a little while there was a house next door that was at risk,” Kelly said.
Kelly said crews remained on the scene for several hours to make sure the hot spots were all put out.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
