PEORIA, Ill. – A woman who died while trying to help her neighbor in a fatal domestic violence incident in Peoria two years ago has received a posthumous award.
Jakaiden Rynearson was recently awarded the Carnegie Medal, the highest honor for civilian heroism in the United States and Canada.
Rynearson came to the aid of 35-year-old Zaneta Winters after she was shot by her boyfriend, Stevie Linwood, in August of 2024. Linwood then shot Rynearson, who died months later from her injuries.
Linwood was found guilty this past February and sentenced to natural life in prison in April.
