WASHINGTON, Ill. (25 News) — A former Washington Community High School basketball coach is in jail for sexual misconduct. 23-year-old Hayley Reneau pleaded guilty to to sexual contact with someone between the ages of 13-17.
In Tazewell County Court on December 20, Reneau pleaded guilty to criminal sexual abuse of someone more than five years younger than her. She was sentenced to 90 days in jail starting January 2, 2020. In addition to jail time, Reneau must serve 2 years probation retroactive to December 20.
Reneau was arrested August 5th for alleged criminal sexual assault of a victim who is a minor. She resigned from her positions on July 29. Team rosters showed her as a coach for the freshman girls volleyball and basketball teams at the school.
Washington Police released the following statement at the time of her arrest in August. “The charge alleges that Reneau held a position of trust, authority, or supervision in relation to the victim, and the victim is at least 13 years of age but under 18 years of age,” the release said.
As for Washington High School, they said the school was notified after the arrest back in August. In a press release at that time, the school said the crime was related to an inappropriate relationship with a student of the high school.
The high school also said the Department of Children and Family Services was notified. In addition, the high school said the student’s family involved in the situation was contacted and they have no reason to believe any other students were affected.
Reneau is registered as a sex offender.
