PEKIN, Ill. — During Monday night’s Pekin City Council meeting, the council approved in a 6-1 vote to provide sponsorship to the 2020 D.A. Points Junior Golf Championship Pekin Tournament.
Pekin Mayor, Mark Luft, said the tournament held at the Pekin Country Club is a good opportunity.
“It’s an event that brings kids in from all over the country, some from other parts of the world,” Luft said. “It’s a qualifying process for them to work their way up into the pro ranks.”
The tournament also helps the players gain college scholarships.
Luft also said the tournament is a fun event.
“D.A. comes here himself. Obviously he’s sponsored by Pekin Insurance. So, that’s two huge entities for here,” he said.
The council agreed upon $7,500 to provide for the American Junior Golf Association. Luft said to provide this function for the kids is worth every penny.
“That comes out of the Hotel/Motel [fund]. Those taxes are funneled in by these events that bring people in that stays at the hotels,” Luft said.
The 54 hole event will take place July 6-9 this year.
