PEORIA, Ill — The Peoria Policy Committee took up the subject of marijuana Thursday at its regular meeting.
Recreational marijuana became legal in Illinois January 1, and the school district hopes to have a policy in place as soon as possible.
In the proposal, employees on school grounds or on-call are not permitted to be under the influence of marijuana.
A checklist is being developed to help school district supervisors determine whether an employee is high.
If an employee is determined to be under the influence, they would be required to take a blood test within three hours.
The employees union proposed that two supervisors be present to check symptoms, something the policy committee disagreed with.
Committee member Dan Walther said the cannabis policy is similar to the district’s alcohol policy.
“Alcohol stays in your system about 8 to 12 hours, but cannabis is not that way. But what we are trying to do is to keep the policy the same as much as possible,” said Walther.
The committee sent the proposed policy to the school board for its consideration at its next meeting.
