PEORIA, Ill. — Renters in Illinois are entitled to a safe, sanitary living environment. It’s the law.
According to Peoria’s Assistant Community Development Director Joe Dulin, that includes a maintained temperature of at least 65 degrees during the winter months.
“So, if your furnace isn’t working to that capacity, or your landlord or anyone encourages you to use other means to get it to that temperature, like space heaters or the oven, don’t do that,” Dulin said.
Dulin told WBD’s Greg and Dan, if your landlord refuses to fix an ongoing issue, you can report them through the Peoria Cares App.
“Let your landlord know immediately when the problem comes up. If the problem continues, and you don’t feel like your landlord is making progress to get something done, that’s when you can reach out to us immediately,” Dulin said.
Dulin said renters are often told by landlords not to let anyone inside the property, including Code Enforcement.
“Sometimes we get into the situation where tenants are afraid to give us a call out of fear of retaliation, or fear of the landlord evicting them,” Dulin said.
