PEORIA, Ill. — For the first time since 2001, the city of Peoria has a new thoroughfare street plan and map in place.
The Peoria city council adopted the new plan Tuesday night during their regular meeting.
The thoroughfare plan will be used by public works and other city departments in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Transportation to re-designate or reconfigure some city streets as transportation and traffic patterns change.
Some possible changes include changing some one-way streets to two-way, and changing the designation of some current major thoroughfares to a neighborhood classification, thus lowering the speed limit.
Councilman Charles Grayeb says the city in the future may need more “complete” streets.
Complete Streets make it easy to cross the street, walk to shops, and bicycle to work. They allow buses to run on time and are designed to make it safe for people to walk to and from train stations.
“Some of the areas where we have implemented the “complete” streets philosophy, we haven’t had people killed anymore…knock on wood” said Grayson.
In the future, the council will required to take action before a thoroughfare is changed.
