METAMORA, Ill. — It’s almost time for the biggest football game of the year, and Illinois State Police wants everyone to be safe.
Alcohol is the number one cause of fatal crashes, especially during celebratory weekends. Last year, 10,511 people were killed in drunk driving accidents.
Public Information Officer Haylie Polistina said they will conduct patrols in high fatality areas throughout the weekend.
“We’ll be out in full force. If you’re under the influence and driving, you will be pulled over,” Polistina said.
Troopers will also be watching for speeding, distracted driving, and seat belt compliance.
Polistina said to think ahead if you plan to consume alcohol or cannabis.
“Have a sober driver. If you notice that someone is drinking, take their keys away from them. Call a ride share service. Plan ahead,” Polistina said. “Just make sure that you’re not putting yourself and others in danger by driving on the roadways under the influence.”
Drivers should also be cautious of vehicles parked on the side of the roadway with flashing lights, move over or slow down.
