CHICAGO, Ill. — Illinois’ Department of Financial and Professional Regulation announced Monday that statewide adult-use cannabis brought in $39,247,840.83 in January.
Dispensaries statewide sold 972,045 items in the first 31 days of recreational pot sales.
Illinois residents purchased just over $30.6 million of cannabis, while sales to out-of-state residents reached $8,636,208.61.
“The successful launch of the Illinois’ legal cannabis industry represents new opportunities for entrepreneurs and the very communities that have historically been harmed by the failed war on drugs,” said Toi Hutchinson, Senior Advisor for Cannabis Control to Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
“The only other Midwestern state [where pot is legal] is Michigan, and it had an even smaller rollout than we did,” she said.
“So, I think part of the excitement — and this is nationally with people looking at Illinois — Jan. 1 was the end of prohibition in this state, and there were a lot of people who wanted to be a part of that historic moment.”
Last month, the Illinois Department of Agriculture released applications for cannabis infuser, craft grower and transporter licenses. IDOA will begin accepting completed applications on Friday, February 14, which must be submitted by 5 p.m. CST on Monday, March 16.
