SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — The Illinois Department of Revenue reminds taxpayers to take advantage of the Earned Income Tax Credit when they file their taxes this year.
Department of Revenue Spokesperson Sam Salustro said the credit is for low to middle income taxpayers.
“The benefits are going to be tied to things like how many children they have, where on the income scale they fall. But, federally, some families can qualify for $6,000 to $7,000,” Salustro said.
Salustro said many people fail to apply for the credit that could net them thousands of dollars, even if they do not have children.
“The IRS has a great tool on their website. There’s something called the EITC Assistant. And, they can use that, and give a little bit of background information, and it will tell them if they’re eligible or not,” Salustro said.
If you qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit on your federal tax return, you automatically qualify for the state credit.
