PEKIN, Ill. — The city of Pekin will now keep tabs on low-speed gas and electric bicycles.
The city council Monday approved an ordinance which will require riders to register with the Pekin Police Department.
The ordinance also will place a one-time $15 registration fee starting in January, 2021.
According to the ordinance, “Every person riding a low-speed electric or gas bicycle upon a roadway within the city shall be subject to all of the provisions of the city’s traffic safety ordinances, as well as the laws of this state applicable to low-speed electric or gas bicycles.”
Councilman John Abel said riders should follow the rules of the road.
“You can’t see them because they are smaller than motorcycles, and some of them don’t have lights,” said Abel.
The penalty for not following the ordinances would be a minimum of a $75 fine, but not more than $750.
Impound fees have been reduced from $150 to $100.
