PEORIA, Ill. — OSF Healthcare received word Tuesday it will be able to move forward with plans to build a comprehensive cancer center.
The Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved a certificate of need application.
According to the HFSRB website, the certificate of need program “promotes the development of a comprehensive health care delivery system that assures the availability of quality facilities, related services, and equipment to the public, while simultaneously addressing the issues of community need, accessibility, and financing. In addition, it encourages health care providers to engage in cost containment, better management and improved planning.”
OSF officials said they plan for the center to include proton beam therapy, which would make the center one of only two in Illinois to contain that sort of therapy, and one of only 32 in North America.
“The vision for the cancer center is as a destination center,” said OSF Healthcare CEO Bob Sehring.
“It is that venue where all these conditions can come together to work collaboratively, but also to connect to cancer centers throughout Illinois.
“That ability to connect, to bring cancer treatment here, closer to the community, is an important step.”
OSF set 2023 as the target year for completion of the $237 million project.
