MORTON, Ill. — The Tazewell County Coroner’s Office has released the name of a man who died in Wednesday’s semi vs. van crash on Interstate 74.
34-year-old Nicacio Gomez-Mecinas of Bloomington died of blunt force trauma injuries.
Illinois State Police said Gomez-Mecinas was the driver of the van and hit a patch of black ice as he was traveling westbound.
That caused the van he was driving to skid into the median and into the eastbound lane, facing oncoming traffic.
The semi hit the van head-on near mile marker 106, killing Gomez-Mecinas and injuring his two passengers.
Those passengers and the semi driver were reportedly taken to OSF Saint Francis with non-life-threatening injuries.
A toxicology report was pending.
