CHICAGO, Ill. — Two Chicago Police officers are being charged in connection with a shooting that left two people hurt in the Pilsen area over the summer.
Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx made the announcement Friday, noting new felony charges against a Chicago police sergeant and an officer.
They are identified as Sgt. Christopher Liakopoulos and Officer Ruben Reynoso. Both are assigned to CPD’s major accidents unit. Both have been charged with aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm and official misconduct.
WGN reports the two were relieved of their police powers and turned themselves in on Thursday and their first court appearances and bond hearings were set.
During Friday’s announcement, Foxx said the 23-year-old man who was shot and taken to the hospital with serious injuries was not in possession of a weapon during the incident in question, which occurred in late July.
It happened around 7 a.m. as the two officers were on their way to the police academy.
Foxx went on to say a review of the evidence, including non-Chicago Police video obtained from the area, showed the officers had no provocation nor justification to shoot the unarmed man.
She also said the two officers made reports to their superiors, including the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, which directly contradicted the video evidence.
Shortly after the shooting, police had claimed on masked subject out of a group had pulled out a gun and exchanged gunfire with them.
No officers were injured as a result of the shooting.
Three people were taken into custody following the incident, CPD said at the time.
