SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Illinois will have to follow new guidelines to reduce the spread of COVID-19.
Governor J.B. Pritzker said Thursday that large-scale events with more than 1,000 people must be cancelled for the next 30 days. Also, gatherings with more than 250 people should be cancelled.
“I know that some people will ask whether these measures are necessary in counties and cities that have seen very few or no coronavirus cases. We have seen what works and what doesn’t work from other countries around the world,” Pritzker said. “Especially in the earliest days of community spread of this virus.”
Under the guidelines, Pritzker said that major sporting events with large crowds, including high school and college games, should be cancelled until May 1, 2020.
“Don’t be fooled into thinking you’re community is immune,” Pritzker said.
At this time, it is not recommended that schools shut down.
Pritzker is also encouraging employers to allow their employees to work from home.
“I’m not going to hesitate to take the most aggressive measures possible to protect the people of our state,” Pritzker said.
