The Fourth of July is a time for fun and fireworks, but police want to remind everyone to be safe.
Sgt. Tony Halsey with Illinois State Police said tens of thousands of people will be along the riverfront on Thursday for UnityPoint Health Red White And Boom Brought Home By Adam Merrick Real Estate.
“It’s supposed to be beautiful weather. Please give yourself ample time to get down there,” Halsey said. “Try to wear bright clothing, reflective clothing, because once the fireworks are over, everyone is going to want to leave in a hurry, and it’s dark with a lot of people down there. People are going to be distracted”.
Police will be looking for those driving distracted, especially by a cell phone.
Beginning July 1st, use of cell phones while driving is now a moving violation, even when the vehicle is at a stop.
“If you are impatient and stuck in traffic leaving the fireworks, please do not get on your cell phone. There will be enough law enforcement out there, both sides of the river,” Halsey said.
Police will also be looking for drunk drivers and those not wearing their seat belts.
“As your are out and about, enjoy the festivities, being safe. Not drinking and driving,” Halsey said. “Staying off your cell phone, and we’re asking you to wear your seat belt as well”.
If you have your own firework show at home, there are some limitations to follow.
“Anything that has a projectile that goes up into the sky and makes a noise or a boom, is considered illegal,” Halsey said. “The fireworks that are set off on the riverfront are trained, permitted, and licensed people who do it”.
Fines for using illegal fireworks at home are a minimum of $250 and can increase depending on the type of fireworks you have, and also how much you have.
